Managing and conserving Arizona’s natural, cultural and recreational resources for the benefit of the people both in our parks and through our partners.

Arizona State Parks and Trails protects and preserves 30 State Parks and Natural Areas. The agency also includes the State Trails Program, outdoor-related Grants Program, the State Historic Preservation Office, as well as the Off-Highway Vehicle Program, and more. Arizona State Parks and Trails provides over 1,400 camping and RV sites throughout the parks and manages 8 of the top 25 most visited natural attractions in Arizona.

Under management supervision, performs a variety of work activities while providing customer service in the operation of a recreational, historic or natural resource park; interprets natural features of the area, or historic objects/artifacts for visitors; and ensures public safety by enforcing Park rules and regulations. - This position will serve as a potential volunteer coordinator, interperative speaker, and park office administrator.

 

Job Duties:

 

PARK RANGER SENIOR

Outdoor Recreation & Programs:

Host visitors, helps train staff and volunteers in a busy ranger station, conduct or assist on interpretive programs, and potentially lead guided walks or hikes.

Provides information in response to visitor questions, direction, guidance, and concerns.

Update social media Facebook page and create interpretive videos to promote the park, nature, and conservation.

Helps schedule and coordinate special events with the public and our partners.

 

Customer Service/Communication/ Admin Duties:

Communicates via telephone and in writing to Park Manager or Assistant Manager, or Regional Manager about the park, advising in operational and personnel issues.

Provides excellent customer service by phone and in-person and respond to public inquiries about park hours, accommodations, and reservations.

Investigates and responds to customer concerns regarding reservations, park amenities, events, etc. via telephone, email, or in person.

Responsible for ordering, stocking, and updating prices as needed for the park store.

 

Cash Handling:

Perform cashier duties at Contact Station/Gift Shop; collect and account for fees for park admission and store purchases.

Process refunds, take camping and event reservations via phone.

Balance registers, make cash drops, deposits, and do bank runs.

Able to follow and train subordinate and volunteers on proper cash handling procedures.

 

Public & Staff Safety:

Promote the safety of park visitors, educate guests and enforce park rules, protect park resources, utilize two-way radio communications system, confers with local officials and law enforcement officers, completes all necessary reports concerning incidents.

Promotes and educates guests on safe recreation practices and recreational opportunities in the park.

 

Community Outreach and Engagement:

Collaborate, foster, and maintain a positive relationship with visitors, guests, stakeholders, and partners on behalf of the park.

Attends and actively participates in community events, local chamber meetings, and outreach programs.

Ensures that mission objectives are met by aligning staff and volunteers in common goals.

Helps keep the park operating safely and within the law including protection of environmental, cultural, and natural resources.

Helps recruit local and out of state volunteers for the benefit of the park.

- Actively works with and trains volunteers and makes sure they uphold the agency's mission - Ensures volunteers are trained on proper park procedures and rules.

 

Maintenance:

Possesses basic maintenance skills including cleaning restrooms, basic housekeeping, basic tool use including drills, hammers, ladders, and proper safety protocols.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

 

Knowledge of:

Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.

Park rules, fees and revenue functions.

Techniques for display and interpretation of objects/artifacts and general/natural resources to visitors; working knowledge of maintenance strategies, volunteer service, and general office procedures.

 

Skill in:

Maintenance and inspection of park infrastructure.

Buildings and equipment,including general plumbing skills,landscaping and electrical troubleshooting and repair, preventive maintenance of chainsaws, and small engine repairs.

Driving and operating automotive equipment including UTV's, skid steer, loader and backhoe.

Watercraft operation and maintenance.

General construction/building maintenance and repair Multi tasking, basic curatorial techniques, multi-tasking.

Working around and with volunteers; and de-escalation techniques.

 

Ability to:

Research of natural or historical information.

Performing math calculations.

First aid techniques.

Oral and written communications.

Interpersonal relationships.

Perform small engine and, equipment and building repair and maintenance.

Deescalate upset or non-compliant visitors, train new staff, and volunteers.

Ability to work in various climates.

Selective Preference(s):

 

Park Ranger Senior:

Two years experience equivalent to a Park Ranger, OR three years of work experience in customer service and maintenance in park related setting; OR a Bachelor's degree in Park Management, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field. Any combination of training and experience that meet knowledge, skills, abilities may be substituted.

 

Park Ranger:

Two years of experience equivalent to a Park Ranger Specialist; OR three years of work experience in customer service, library or museum work; OR a Bachelor's degree in Park Management, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field. Any combination of training and experience that meet knowledge, skills, and abilities may be substituted.

 

Pre-Employment Requirements:

 

Must possess and maintain a current Arizona Driver's license appropriate to assignment.

 

Some positions may require certification as an Emergency Medical Technician, Water Distribution, Wastewater collections Operator, and/or Certified Interpretive Guide.
