A role with Employee Relations means the opportunity to provide legal counsel on internal employee relations matters for our domestic field, headquarters and international locations. Your internal clients will be Human Resources and various business leaders, and you’ll consult on investigations and respond to both internal and external claims.

Under the general guidance of the Field and Litigation Employee Relations (“ER”) attorney team, this Lead ER Paralegal provides Target’s stores and global supply chain logistics teams strategic and timely ER services that represent the company’s brand, mission and philosophy in a cost-effective and responsible manner.

Provides strategic guidance to HR, ER, and Labor Relations partners while assessing company exposure on a wide variety of employment-related issues and recommends solutions as appropriate by analyzing pros and cons, alternative strategies, past and best practices, etc.

Collaborates with attorney team to understand ER initiatives and priorities and deliver paralegal support, including participation in projects, investigations, data analysis, drafting, tracking, collecting and maintaining legal documentation, and consulting with HR and business partners as appropriate.

Represents ER on business initiatives by independently leading projects, setting and managing timelines, escalating issues, and communicating progress with key partners and leaders.

Trains other HR Field partners in corporate and departmental policies; Provides guidance on, and awareness of best practices and legal requirements related to a wide variety of employment-related issues, including Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), discrimination and harassment claims.

Establishes and maintains key cross-functional relationships across Legal Affairs, HR, and business leaders to resolve issues, drive collaboration and coordination on projects, business initiatives and legal matters, and develop a keen understanding of HR and business objectives and strategies

Assists with responses to subpoenas, administrative charges, and other governmental requests; Reviews and revises position statements written internally or by outside counsel and responds to demand letters in consultation with ER Counsel, including fact investigation, assessing risk based on applicable law, and coordination with opposing counsel.

May support ER Counsel in managing a wide array of employment litigation and other legal matters, including supporting the development and execution of litigation strategy with outside counsel, facilitating discovery in single-plaintiff and class-action litigation, and actively participating in depositions and mediations, including travel, as needed.

Works autonomously to represent the ER team in various projects, such as the development of alternative fee arrangements with outside counsel, store closings, revisions to company policies or practices, the development of policies related to the employment of team members, and other company initiatives with team member impact.

Commissions legal research to outside counsel as needed, providing them with direction. Reviews and interprets outside counsel’s results and advises HR partners on pros and cons, strategies, liabilities, etc.

About you:

Four year degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

5+ years of experience working within the employment law specialty at a law firm, in law department or in an HR capacity

Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively as a member of a team

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to facilitate meetings, resolve conflict, build consensus, establish rapport and collaborate effectively across departments and externally

Analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to leverage data to influence decisions, identify risks and improvement opportunities, and distill complex issues into actionable plans

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, maintaining appropriate prioritization and ensuring adherence to deadlines

Ability to apply discretion and sensitivity while working with confidential information

Proficient in Microsoft Excel/Word/PowerPoint

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Degree in Paralegal Studies/Paralegal Certificate

This position may be considered for a Full-Time Remote or Hybrid work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid work arrangement means the team members core role will be a blend of virtual and onsite at a Target location. A Full-Time Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that’s not a Target location, does not have a desk at their primary HQ work location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada residents is $85,400 to $153,700. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, Target cares about and invests in you as a team member, so that you can take care of yourself and your family.
