A storekeeper is responsible for managing inventory, which includes receiving, storing, and issuing goods while maintaining accurate records of all stock movements. Key duties involve inspecting incoming deliveries for damage or discrepancies, organising and maintaining storage areas, and ensuring stock levels are sufficient to meet demand without overstocking. Storekeepers also handle documentation, coordinate with other departments, and may supervise other staff members, depending on the role.

Responsibilities

  • Receiving and inspecting: Accept, unload, and inspect deliveries to ensure they match purchase orders and check for any damage or discrepancies.
  • Storing and organising: Arrange items in a designated, organised, and safe manner, paying attention to factors like weight, size, temperature, and safety precautions.
  • Issuing and dispensing: Dispense stock by measuring or counting requested items and documenting all issues.
  • Inventory control: Maintain accurate stock records, conduct periodic physical counts to verify against records, and manage stock rotation, including disposing of surplus or expired items.
  • Restocking and ordering: Monitor stock levels and initiate purchase requisitions when stock runs low.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Record keeping: Maintain accurate records of all stock receipts, issues, and movements in stock registers, ledgers, or electronic systems.
  • Documentation: Handle all necessary documentation, such as generating material received reports and processing purchase orders.
  • Reporting: Report any damaged goods or discrepancies to the appropriate personnel and may be responsible for generating regular inventory reports.
